The Zeppelin Terror
Home Defence over Lincolnshire during WW1
During WW1 the German Zeppelins were very active over the Lincolnshire region because the Humber Estuary and Wash were very good navigation and entry points for attacks on Hull and Grimsby and the East Midlands and North further inland.
The attacks were for the most part unsuccessful and resulted mostly in scattered indiscriminate bombing. The Zeppelins did cause significant loss of life and damage on occasions. They had great propaganda value for the Germans and the English civilian population demanded action.
Home Defence Squadrons were formed and based all round the east and south east coast in an effort to shoot down these intruders. The aircraft were hopelessly inadequate for the task but as organisation, training and the technology improved by the end of WW1 a number of notable successes had been achieved. None were over Lincolnshire or the North and Midlands however.
I found the whole story fascinating and have written up my notes and it is now in Flip Book format.
