3/4 March 1945 - 7/NJG5 Lubeck - Junkers Ju88G-6 – C9+RR – Feldwebel Heinrich Conze
Location – Along Welton-Hackthorn road
This crew were participating in the mass Luftwaffe intruder operation, Operation Giesela, over eastern England on the night of the 3 / 4 March 1945. Conze and his crew reportedly shot down a Lancaster near Langthorn and then headed towards Scampton at very low level where Conze spotted a car driving along the Welton – Hackthorn Road and opened fire but hit telegraph wires and crashed killing the 4 man crew and the driver of the car

This fine gentleman was a serving member of the Royal Observer Corps, Hackthorn Post and also of the Lincolnshire Police Special Constabulary, Welton contingent. He was the only member of the Royal Observer Corps to die whilst on duty during WW2
