5 December 1942 - 1658 HCU, RAF Riccall - Handley Page Halifax II - R9531 - F/S D C Cameron RCAF - Training.
Approximate Location - In the vicinity of Scunthorpe. Possibly north east Scunthorpe in the Fordingham area.
On Saturday 5th December 1942 Halifax II R9531 from No.1658 H.C.U. had taken off from RAF Station Riccall, Yorkshire for a cross country navigational exercise. At roughly 13.00 hours eyewitnesses reported that an aircraft was observed flying low near Scunthorpe, it was also observed that the aircraft started to bank and the attitude of the bank getting steeper with the aircraft eventually stalling and falling to the ground. The aircraft was observed to crash amongst buildings, which turned out to be Hydroprest Ltd. Concrete Works injuring nine work men, a further three people were injured by flying glass in a nearby hotel. The aircraft crashed through the roof of the factory and exploded killing all but one of the crew members. Sgt R.F. Pretty RAFVR critically injured.
Three of this crew were claimed by their families and buried in their home towns. The remaining 3 rest in Brigg Cemetery. See below.
