Two 49 Squadron RAF Hawker Hinds collided at a height of 200ft above RAF Scampton. K6753 flown by P/O Tyrrell was engaged in a solo gun camera practise and the other machine, K6643 flown by Sgt Davies with AC2 Scoberg, was taking off
The two planes touched and the undercarriage and one wing of K6643 which was climbing away after take off were torn off. The wreckage of this plane was scattered on the landing ground over a wide area. The wreckage of K6753, crashed in a ploughed field beside the Lincoln-Kirton Lindsey road.
49 Squadron had moved to RAF Scampton 2 weeks prior to this incident. This was the first fatal accident at Scampton since the station was opened in October 1936.
