P/O John R Henningham RAAF and crew - 576 Sqn - RAF Elsham Wolds – 1943/44

Above - John Henningham in middle and I believe it is Arthur Davis on the right.

Pilot Officer John Romer Henningham RAAF. Age 21. Son of Herbert William and Mercy Adelaide Henningham of Belle Vue Hill. New South Wales, Australia. Henningham and his crew were amongst the first crews posted from HCU to 576 Sqn when the Squadron was formed at the end of Nov 1943.

Tour of Operations

All operations flown from Elsham Wolds, Lincolnshire.

5/4th December 1943 Target - Leipzig. Aircraft Lancaster ED888. F/S J R Henningham flew as second pilot with W/O C C Rollins and crew. Up 0000 Down 0720.

16/17th December 1943. Target - Berlin. Aircraft Lancaster ED767.

Up 1655 Down 2325. Diverted to Waltham on return.

29/30th December 1943. Target - Frankfurt. Aircraft Lancaster ED767. Crew as above. John Henningham is now shown as P/O. Up 1715 Down 0005.

2/3rd January 1943. Target - Berlin. Aircraft Lancaster W4245. Up 1115 Down 0225. Early return due to misinterpretation of signal.

5/6th January 1943. Target - Stettin. Aircraft Lancaster ND416. Failed to return.

Believed to have crashed at Pasewalk, a large town 36 km WNW of Stettin.

All were buried at Pasewalk but have since been reintered at the Berlin 1939- 1945 War Cemetery.

Sgt Arthur Sydney Davis RAFVR – Navigator – 20 – 576 Sqn - Son of Sydney Charles and Kathleen Mary Davis of Wickford, Essex. Awarded a Certificate of the Royal Society of Arts - Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany.

Sgt Frederick John Wright RAFVR – Wireless Operator / Air Gunner – 576 Sqn - Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany.

Sgt John Leslie Colbourne RAFVR – Air Gunner – 25 – 576 Sqn - Son of John and Alice Colbourne of Dudley, Worcestershire - Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany.

Sgt James Edward Kennison RAFVR – Air Gunner – 32 - Son of George Edward and Ellen Martha Kennison of Bescot, Walsall, Staffordshire - Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany.

5 Jan 44 – Stettin – Germany - Night – 11 aircraft detailed. Briefing 1400 hours. Good results and some photographs show ground detail. F/L Smith and crew with Sgt Kirkpatrick and P/O Henningham and crew are missing from this operation No word has been received from any of the missing personnel.

( 358 aircraft. A good attack which started well but drifted west. 8 ships sunk and significant damage in the central parts of the city )
