F/O E D Candler RAFVR and crew – 103 Squadron – RAF Elsham Wolds – 1945
Hit by another aircraft at airfield on return – 10/11th April 1945 – Avro Lancaster III – PA217 – Op Plauen
F/O Candler and his crew were posted to 103 Squadron at RAF Elsham Wolds from Heavy Conversion Unit 71 Base on the 19th March 1945. They completed the following operations :-
03-Apr-45 - Nordhausen - Lancaster - PA278 – F/O ED Candler
09-Apr-45 - Kiel - Lancaster - N/K – F/O ED Candler
10-Apr-45 - Plauen - Lancaster - PA217 – F/O ED Candler - Accident on return with RF193. Rear Gunner F/O Mayers killed.
No.103 Squadron RAF Lancaster PA217 (coded PM-Z) was damaged on 11 April 1945 at 0320 hrs on return from operations to Plauen. The aircraft had stopped in the position indicated by the Marshaller. The engines had been shut down. Most of the crew had disembarked. The pilot was about to switch off the aircraft lights when it was struck by taxying 103 Squadron Lancaster RF193 (coded PM-G). Pilot F/O E.D. Candler and five of his crew were unhurt; however, rear-gunner F/O B. Mayers was killed in the incident.
