G/C Ronald E Baxter DFC RAF

Officer Commanding RAF Elsham Wolds – 1945

Ronald E Dickens

Ronald E Dickens

I have only sketchy details of Ronald Baxter however he seems to have attended Cambridge University about 1933 or 1934. He must have been born about 1913 and may have joined the RAF pre war. I have no knowledge of Baxter’s career from then until 1943

He was Officer Commanding 50 Squadron at RAF Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire in 1943. In 1944 he was Officer Commanding 106 Squadron at RAF Merthingham and was awarded a DFC.

On the 25 March 1945 he was appointed Officer Commanding RAF Elsham Wolds.

Michael Renaut who became OC 103 Squadron on the 7th August 45 until their disbandment on the 26 November 1945 was very favourably impressed by Ronnie Baxter.

In hs book Terror in the Night Renaut recalls :-

“Elsham Wolds (near Brigg and Scunthorpe) proved to be a very pleasant station and was under the command of Group Captain Ronnie Baxter, DFC, and he and I were similar types and hit it off immediately. I liked Group Captain Baxter and he was a most efficient station commander, a great disciplinarian who would stand no nonsense but a man with a great sense of humour. He was the complete opposite of my former Station Commander Group Captain Bray at RAF North Creake, being tall, dark haired and handsome with a fine black moustache, unmarried and most eligible! “

I shall be interested to know more about Ronald Baxter and if anyone can add anything to that I shall be most grateful.
