Beverley, East Yorkshire

Beverley airfield

Beverley racecourse clearly visible bottom middle with post WW1 Beverley urban sprawl clearly evident from the top right. The A1079 York Road runs across the bottom of the pic

This airfield was situated north of Kingston upon Hull on the west side of Beverley to the north of the A1079 road. The airfield was established on the present-day race-course. The hangars and all other buildings were situated in the south-west corner of the site with easy access from the main road.

Like many other racecourses during WW1 it was pressed into immediate use and from March to October 1916, both the Headquarters and 'C' Flight of 33 Squadron were based there with their BE2c and 2d aircraft.

Their main task was the protection of the Humber Estuary and ports on anti Zeppelin patrols.

That same year also saw 6 Canadian Reserve Squadrons with Curtiss JN3s and 4s operating from Beverley. These were training and working up to operational standard before being transferred overseas. Also, on March 1 1916, 47 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, was formed at Beverley and flew alongside 33 Squadron on Home Defence duties before going to Macedonia the following September. The C Flight of 33 Squadron departed for their new home at Elsham Wolds in late 1916.

In April 1917, 90 Training Squadron arrived from Doncaster and in November of that year 80 Squadron arrived with Sopwith F1 Camels, but this unit remained only a few weeks and moved out on January 27 1918.

Flying ceased after the war but part of the site remained with the RAF and during the 1930s a radio section operated from here and the Royal Air Force's first radio telephone sets were tested through Beverley in 1938. During WW2 the site was used by the Army and today it is still used for horse racing.
