Barmby Moor – East Yorkshire

Barmby Moor

This site was established in 1916 as a 2nd Class Home Defence Landing Ground. It was located at close to the village of Barmby Moor which is about 1 mile west of the pleasant market town of Pocklington.

Landing ground was situated north of the A 1079 York Road and bounded to the west by Feoffee Common Lane.

The exact location seems unclear but the most likely position is outlined in blue on the map above

This was common land and was not hedged or fenced and had no drainage ditches.

It has been suggested that the area outlined in green was the site but this seems unlikely as it was hedged and had a drainage ditch running across it. There were no hangars on the site. There may have been one or two temporary huts but no trace remains

Tithe Farm is shown by the yellow triangle and Newfield Farm by the orange triangle.

There is also mention of a landing strip east of Barmby Moor on the Barmby Road to Pockington which is outlined in red

Be that as it may the Barmby Moor Landing Ground had no connection to the later WW2 airfield at RAF Pocklington

BE2c and BE2d fighters of 33 Home Defence Squadron used Barmby Moor for a short while in 1916 as a Landing Ground. 33 HD Squadron transferred to Lincolnshire later that year and replaced by 76 HD Squadron equipped with the BE2 and BE12 types which were replaced by Bristol F2bs in 1918. These remained in service until the end of WW1

The landing ground was closed to flying and vacated in June 1919 when 76 HD Squadron was disbanded.

As an interesting footnote the Barmby Moor area was attacked by a Zeppelin in September 1916 when Zeppelin L13 dropped 24 bombs, mostly around Frog Hall and Tadpole Cottage just south of the A1079. Thankfully most fell in open country although it is reported an empty stable was destroyed. This Zeppelin was one of several sent to bomb York that night.
