9 February 1941 - 71 Squadron, RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey - Hawker Hurricane 1 - V6983 - P/O Edwin E Orbison – Convoy Patrol.

Location – Redbourne area 1 mile east of Kirton-in-Lindsey airfield.

Whilst on a convoy patrol lost his bearings in thick cloud. This caused the pilot to lose control of the aircraft and it spun out from 4000 ft crashing into the ground. The pilot is thought to have baled out.

P/O Edwin Ezell Orbison RAFVR ( pictured above ) – Pilot – 23 - 71 Sqn – Kirton-in-Lindsey Cemetery, Lincolnshire.

This airman was born in 1918 in Oklahoma, USA and enlisted in the RAF early in the war. He was involved in another fatal incident a month before which resulted in the death of P/O Leckrone who is also buried at Kirton-in-Lindsey. Orbison did very well  to manage to land safely at base as his left wing was badly torn in the collision.
