8/9 September 1942 - 15(P) AFU, RAF Kirmington - Airspeed Oxford - BG270 – Sgt Charles G Jones RNZAF– Training.

Location - About 1 mile SSE of RAF Kirmington airfield on rising ground.

This aircraft was attached to 15 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, RAF Leconfield, Yorkshire; satellite at RAF Kirmington, Lincolnshire - 21 Group. Airspeed Oxford BG270 with Sgt C J Jones RNZAF and Sgt M R Mitchell RCAF took off from Kirmington at about 0030, but failed to climb away and crashed a few minutes later into rising ground bursting into flames about a mile SSE of the airfield. This would probably make it half way between Kirmington and Somerby. Subsequent investigation raised concerns that the instructor had been overworked and that fatigue may have been a factor leading to the accident. Sgt Jones and Sgt Mitchell rest at Brigg Cemetery Lincolnshire.

Pilot Instr: NZ413083 Sgt Charles Glynn Jones RNZAF ( pictured above ) - Age 20. 450hrs (309 solo - 266 on Oxford) Mother Mrs P.G. Jones of Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand.

Pupil:- Sgt Morris Randolph Mitchell RAF – Age 22 - Son of Dr. Morris Randolph Mitchell and Grace Gates Mitchell, of Van Nuys, California, U.S.A.

As Mitchell was RAF he must have enlisted pre war.

Co-incidentally Allan Barnes Goff RCAF killed in an Oxford crash from Kirmington on the 4th May 1942 was also from California USA.
