[RAF Elsham Wolds] [Local Crashes] [27 January 1943 143 Sqn]

27 January 1943 – 143 Squadron RAF North Coates – Bristol Beaufighter IIF – T3447 – F/O John Frederick Herbert RAAF– Duty Night Navigation exercise

Location – Aylesby near Laceby, Lincs

Bristol Beaufighter IIF 1941 in flight Merlins

On the 27th of January 1943, Herbert took off with F/S McPherson on a night navigation exercise in  Beaufighter T3447. Witnesses saw the Beaufighter complete a partial circuit while returning from the exercise. Suddenly it struck the ground in a very shallow dive, approximately 4 miles from the airfield, and burned out on a local defence post. The pilot and observer were both killed.

The cause of the crash was not determined, but it was believed that either Herbert had misread his altimeter on a very dark night or that the altimeter may have been faulty.

F/O John Frederick Herbert RAAF - Pilot – 22 - 143 Sqn - Son of Frederick Thomas Harvey Herbert and Florence Amelia Herbert, of Corryong, Victoria, Australia – North Cotes St Nicholas Churchyard, Lincolnshire.

F/S Joseph Cormack McPherson RAFVR – Observer – 143 Sqn – Duffus Cemetery, Scotland
