[RAF Elsham Wolds] [Local Crashes] [14th July 1943 53 OTU]

14 July 1943 – 53 OTU, RAF Kirton in Lindsey – Supermarine Spitfire IA – X4818 – S/L Allan Everitt Johnson RAF – Training Flight

Approximate location – Farmland at Goole Fields just outside the town of Goole

53 OTU Spitfire IA

On 14th July 1943 at least two Spitfires belonging to 53 OTU were carrying out an air to air gunnery practice over the Humber area. The lead aircraft was being flown by Allan Johnson and a trainee pilot was flying the following aircraft. The trainee accidentally released the safety catch and  badly damaged the lead Spitfire resulting in Johnson having to bale out. The aircraft crashed on farmland at Goole Fields just outside the town of Goole. Johnson’s body was recovered from the Dutch River in Old Goole a few days later by local policemen. Some items from the wrecked aircraft were salvaged in the 80/90s but were later stolen.

Many thanks to Peter Wilson for his comments and revisions to the original page.
