Sgt F J Mitchell RAF Photo Page
Below are a selection of photos from the album of Francis Mitchell
Mitchell on left of this group of four. None show any rank or trade badges so must be pre war. Airmen under training
Mitchell second from the left on back row. The photo was taken in Paris October 1939. The three on the back row with the O Wings are Observers. The two at the front and Mitchell are Wireless Operator/ Air gunners. The airman with the moustache on the left looks like Sgt Davison who was Observer with Sgt Charles Perry. The young man to the right of Mitchell may be Sgt Albert Dowling who was killed in the bombing at Souge France during the final stage of the evacuation. His name is on the back of the photo.
Perpignan 1939. Mitchell is extreme right. The airman on the left looks very much like a photo I have of G Lisle who was a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner with 103 Squadron in France at this time
This photo is dated 20 June 1940. Mitchell is second left. The photo must have been taken in the UK within a day or two of the evacuation from France.
Studio portrait of Mitchell possibly taken around the same time as the above. Note he now has one good conduct chevron on his left sleeve. By this time he must have done 3 years service
This photo was taken post war when Mitchell, extreme right, was a pilot with 550 Squadron. Probably taken in Naples in the summer of 1945 on a Dodge sortie
Mitchell centre probably in Naples taken at the same time as the above.
A nice photo of Mitchell in his best uniform showing his pilots wings and a medal ribbon
Finally a grand photo of the vets of 550 Squadron at RAF Coningsby 1994
Many thanks to the Mitchell family for providing these photos. I very much enjoyed going through them and producing this page
