Flying Officer Stoney Mitchell RAAF and the Last Flight of Lancaster ME449

103 Squadron Mitchell

Stoney Mitchell was an Australian Navigator who served with 103 Sqdn in late 1944 and early 1945. He flew 13 operations in the crew of fellow Australian Gaven Henry. At the end of Jan 45 F/O Henry sustained a broken wrist and was unfit to fly for several months. Stoney’s 14th and last operation was on the 12th March 1945 in the crew of S/L Slater in Lancaster ME449. This was a mine-laying sortie in the Kullen Sound.

ME449 was attacked by a night fighter during this operation and shot down. Five of the crew survived and all evaded to Sweden with the help of many courageous Danish patriots.
