John Stanley Bucknole RAFVR – 103 Sqn

103 Squadron Bucknole

John was born in London in 1920. He enlisted in the RAFVR on the 15th March 1939 and attended an RAFVR camp at Stapleford Abbott in late June/early July 39.

At the outbreak of war he was posted to London TC3 ITW from Oct 39 to April 40 then HORC Pool, 5 FTC and 7 OTU arriving at 54 Sqn on the 29th Sept 1940. At the time this unit flew Spitfires.

His career took a different direction when he was posted to 20 OTU on the 23rd Dec 1940 to train on bombers.

He was posted to 103 Sqn on the 2nd April 1941 and completed several operations as a co-pilot In late June 41 he was given his own crew and completed 6 operations as captain in the next 4 weeks. All of these were to German targets. John was lost on the 24th July in a daylight raid on German capital ships at Brest. He is listed as Missing and commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
