F/S Geoff Maddern RAAF and crew and Don Charlwood RAAF – 103 Sqn

103 Squadron Maddern crew

Geoff Maddern's crew pictured mid 42. Left to Right - Frank Holmes RAFVR, Mid Upper Gunner, Max Burcher RAAF, Wireless Operator, Doug Richards, RAFVR, Flight Engineer, Geoff Maddern DFM RAAF, Pilot, Ted Batten RAFVR, Air Bomber, Don Charlwood RAAF, Navigator, Arthur Browett RAFVR, Rear Gunner. Max Burcher was wounded and replaced by Graham Briggs DFM RAFVR around the end of 42.

Maddern led his crew of 3 Aussies and 4 Brits through the winter of 1942/43. When they finished their tour in April 43 they became the first crew to complete a full 30 op tour since the Squadron converted to 4 engined bombers in Aug the previous year.

The photo above was one of several which came to me from the family of Keith Miller years ago. Keith was navigator in Ted Laing’s crew. When Don Charlwood saw that photo he asked me for a copy as he had never seen it before which is why it never appeared in any of his books.

Frank Holmes had a strong connection to the area as he came from nearby Kirmington. He was killed flying with 582 Pathfinder Squadron on the 4th May 1944

Don's books are all available through the family publishing business -

Burgewood Books,

PO Box 326,

Warrandyte,

Victoria,

Australia 3113.

No Moon Tonight is published in the UK by Crecy and is available on Amazon or through your local Waterstones or W H Smiths.

I will return to Maddern’s crew and Don Charlwood in the winter and write more about them then. In the meantime below I have show the details of the Maddern crew tour to be going on with.
